Cops Knock, Murder Suspect Kills Himself

"INSTITUTE, WV — An Institute man shot himself in the head as deputies investigating a tip of a possible homicide knocked on the door of his apartment, authorities said.

"Kanawha County deputies received a tip about 4 p.m. Thursday of a possible homicide in the Insitute area, Chief Deputy John Rutherford said. Detectives confirmed the information through witness interviews and were able to establish enough probable cause to secure a search warrant for an apartment on Barron Drive.

"Detectives and deputies went to 107 A Barron Drive a few hours later.

"`They knocked and announced 'Sheriff's Department, search warrant,' for several minutes before a few of the deputies went around to the back,` Rutherford said. `As they were knocking on the back door, they heard a muffled pop and immediately made entry.`

"Inside deputies found a black man with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene and the weapon was recovered.

"The body was taken to the office of the state Medical Examiner."
